This is one of the brick columns at the entrance to Jericho Plantation. You can see the cotton fields beyond. The house itself was obscured by the live oaks, and since it was a private home we couldn’t just drive down the allee.
Jericho is a plantation that was owned by John Lawton. Story has it that this plantation was burned by Sherman but rebuilt.
There’s a small Episcopal church almost hidden down a lane across from Jericho Plantation. It’s called the Church of the Heavenly Rest. It’s such a small church in such an out-of-the-way location that I can’t imagine that it has many congregants.
Each side of the church had four stained glass windows. Around the back of the church was a larger one of Jesus.
There were no storm windows of any kind to protect these windows.
One of the largest wasp’s nest I’ve ever seen was at the back of the church next to Jesus.
The church was surrounded by a metalwork fence.
The day began with rain, rain, and more rain from the weather bands of the hurricane Ida. My front yard by the gate was an enormous pond. Fortunately I had rubber boots and waded my way out. We didn’t set out until early afternoon when it appeared that the rains were stopping. The rest of the day was overcast and cool, so no mosquitoes! It turned out to be a good day for an outing.

I suppose you know, but in case you don’t Sugar’s great great grandfather was Alex James. Alex James had a brother Winborn who had a son John born in 1830 that was the owner of Jericho. Thus John was a first cousin to Sugar’s great grandfather.

I agree! When I saw the sign, I said “Wait a minute…” And I stopped and read the sign again. The name makes you stop and contemplate. It’s the perfect name.
