Rawls Family Reunion 1895

I am shamed.  I have no idea who sent this copy of a newspaper clipping to me years ago.  I cannot give credit where credit is due.  I will blame old age.  Anyway…

(Edited here on 8/25/10 to give credit for the newspaper clipping to COUSIN John Rawls.  Read the comments!)

Here we have the family of “Chate” Rawls, whose given name was really Washington Lafayette.  My father remembered hearing about Uncle Chate, but couldn’t give a specific memory.  Chate and my father’s great-grandfather Isaac Rawls were brothers, two boys in a family of 12 children.

Our lives really are a vapor aren’t they? We are here for such a short time.

This is a great picture, thank you for posting it.

Right this second I am looking at the 1900 census for these families. There’s Hacy, Champie, Bennie, and little Veda RIGHT THERE. Little Veda is by her Granddaddy, like Sophie in the truck with her Pa. And I’m looking at the woman to Chate’s right, but it’s not his wife, although both women are named Martha. So who could she be? They seem to be close, like a sibling perhaps. Then it hit me. Chate had a sister named Martha and I’ve never been able to find her.
I JUST FOUND HER. SHE MARRIED A MYRICK. Ahhh, life is good.

Ms. Rawls – The photo most likely came from me. I have an original newspaper and in the 90’s, I scanned it and sent it out to several Rawls and Gatewood researchers. You are right about Martha Rawls Myrick. She is Chate’s sister and at the time of this picture, had lost her 3 children and her husband. The baby in the top row far right is Brook Vernon Rawls, born July 1897 so this picture was taken in the fall of 1897. Chate and Martha were my 2GGrandparents, Benjamin H. “Bennie” Rawls was my grandfather. Do you have other pictures of Chate or his brothers and sisters?

        Cousin John! Welcome! It’s you!
I have no pictures that go back as far as Chate 😦 .
I hope you have enjoyed the things that I put on the blog!

I just Googled Chate & Martha Rawls and found your blog. They were my great-great-grandparents. Their daughter Betty Rawls Atkins was the mother of my grandmother, Mavis Atkins Driver. I have a large portrait of Chate & Martha, and some smaller photos as well…

I knew that picture looked familiar! I found the newspaper clipping with the notes written on it. I also have the original photo of the reunion. I’ll try to scan it to get a clearer image than the clipping.
