January 1738 – February 1753

In this building which probably ante-

dates the year 1715 … Dr. Lining

lived … made observations of the

weather … and may have conduct-

ed his apothecary shop … It is

certain that it has been used for

this last purpose since 1780 …

Erected by the city of Charleston

January 11, 1938”

Charleston was crowded with tourists and churchgoers.  We drove around for half an hour before we finally found this spot.  It was a beautiful day, weather-wise, for touring the city.

The guidebook and drinks give us away.  Every time.  And the white tennis shoes and obligatory ball caps don’t help.
